SPRING WORKSHOP:
HERE BE DRAGONS! & VASILISA'S JOURNEY

Rosalind Heiko, Ph.D., ISST

Morning:
Here be Dragons: An Introduction to Understanding Differing Approaches to Mapping the Sandplay Journey

Ancient maps delineated the outlines of the known world, heralding the unexplored by the words: “Here be Dragons!” We begin by exploring the various approaches to understanding and mapping the Sandplay Journey through the lens of Joseph Campbell’s mythic Hero’s Journey, Murdock’s Heroine’s Journey and Heiko’s Sandplay Journey Map™, based upon Campbell, Sandplay Teacher Betty Jackson, and the Clifts’ Hero’s Journey in Dreams. Sandplay therapists in training have always been vitally concerned with where their clients’ work was progressing in this cycle. The Sandplay Journey Map™ continues to refine this journey model by explaining these stages in a way that is simple and elegant. This practical method of scrutinizing the client’s work in the sand deeply enriches and illuminates our perspective on our clients’ struggles.

This presentation will cover the various ways to approach understanding the stages of the Sandplay Journey through case presentation, discussion and shared experiences. As the saying goes, “Anyone can plant a seed, but only a farmer can make it grow”. This workshop will help therapists cultivate their understanding of this complex process of Sandplay practice.

Learning Objectives

1. Workshop participants will be able to identify three different approaches to understanding the stages of the Sandplay Journey in their play therapy practice.

2. Workshop participants will be able to Identify and describe the four quadrants of Heiko’s Sandplay Journey Map™.

3. Workshop participants will be able to discuss the clinical application of the Sandplay Journey Map™ in their practice of Sandplay and play therapy.

Afternoon:
Vasilisa’s Journey: Trusting Our Intuition

The story of Vasilisa the Brave illuminates the multifaceted challenges of bridging inner growth through the process of individuation. Pleasing others and doing what is expected of us can be dangerously dissonant to our psyche. How can we professionals help our clients and ourselves listen to our intuition more carefully? How can we help our client develop the cognitive and discriminative skills to sift through the static to find the treasures of understanding and grounding in the present moment? Vasilisa’s path is a heroine’s journey from an innocent and undifferentiated state, through the struggle to become aware of the challenges of facing life’s burdens and life tasks, to maturity. Participants will learn about the psyche’s work to honor the Self through visual arts presentation, story, music, guided meditation and creation of their own symbol. Guided discussion of the archetypal and personal symbols in this journey (illustrated by Georgia Mann’s luscious ceramic artforms) will complete this presentation.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will describe the three (3) tasks required of Vasilisa when meeting the Baba Yaga, the Witch of the Forest.

2. Participants will be able to clearly identify and describe the symbol of illumination in the psyche in Vasilisa?s journey.

3. Participants will be able to describe four (4) key elements in the heroine?s journey from innocence to maturity in the story of Vasilisa.
