What Makes a Sandplay Therapist?

Sandplay therapists are psychotherapists or psychologists who have completed their own sandplay process with a certified sandplay therapist and studied sandplay theory and practice. (If you are interviewing someone who claims to be a sandplay therapist, be sure to ask them if they have completed their own process.  This training is critical to the success of the therapeutic process.)

Sandplay Therapists may or may not have completed requirements for certification by the Sandplay Therapists of America (STA). They may also be marriage and family therapists, play therapists, art therapists, movement/dance therapist, Jungian or contemplative therapists or those with other special training. Sandplay therapists belong to state or regional groups such as CSTA and also to the national (STA) and international (ISST) organizations for sandplay therapists, either as associate or certified members. 

CSTA is Colorado’s professional organization for sandplay therapists and offers training events in the fall and spring with certified national and international teaching members. Case consultation is also available. CSTA announces events through this website, in its online E-News and brochure mailings. Sandplay Therapists of America  

STA is the national professional organization for sandplay therapists and maintains standards for training and certification in the United States. Therapists who receive certification become members of the International Society of Sandplay Therapists (ISST, see below). Therapists who have not been certified may join as associate members. STA sponsors numerous training events and a biannual national conference, and publishes the Journal of Sandplay Therapy  and a newsletter for associate members.

International Society of Sandplay Therapists

ISST is the international professional organization for sandplay therapists representing members from Europe, the British Isles, North and South America, Japan and other regions.
